Statewide Airport Economic Impact Study

Project Status

August 2018

  • The Study will estimate airport and statewide economic impacts for: airport management, airport tenants/businesses, average annual capital investment, spending from general aviation visitors, and spending from commercial visitors. Data collection efforts are currently underway to support these estimates.
  • State, federal, and local investment histories for each airport have been assembled. Surveys were sent to airports and Fixed Base Operators (FBOs) throughout the state for distribution to visitors arriving on general aviation aircraft.

September 2018

  • Work is underway with each commercial airport to set up online surveys to gather information from visitors arriving on commercial airline flights.

October 2018

  • Surveys were distributed to airport managers and aviation-related businesses/tenants who provide customer support at all study airports. All airports and airport-related aviation businesses will be contacted by a representative from the consultant team to obtain vital study information.
  • Airport visits were conducted in October and November of 2018.

March 2019

  • Opportunity for Airport Review of Direct Inputs to Economic Impact Analysis: On March 29, 2019, each official MnDOT airport contact should have received an email from Marc Cocanougher at Jviation providing a link that enables the airport to check direct impacts collected through study surveys/interviews. If you are your airport’s official MnDOT contact and you did not receive this notification, please contact Chris Morgan (christopher.morgan@state.mn.us) at MnDOT.
  • Pilot Survey: As part of its Statewide Economic Impact Study for airports in Minnesota, MnDOT is collecting information on how the efficiency of businesses in Minnesota is improved by airports/aviation. Pilots who use Minnesota airports are often flying for business-related reasons. By providing information on your business-related flying, you will help MnDOT document important airport benefits to elected officials and local residents. The online survey will be accessible through May 24, 2019: https://jviation.tfaforms.net/423477.
