Project Updates

November 22, 2016: Due to the recent rainstorms that have saturated the subgrade, pouring the curb and gutter has been delayed from tomorrow until next Tuesday, November 29. The sidewalk will be poured next week, and the final section of paving is anticipated to be completed the first week of December.

As the holiday season is upon us, please be mindful of increased traffic and keep an eye out for our work crews – we want everyone home safe for the holidays!

November 14, 2016: Work has been completed on the retaining wall. This week’s effort will be focused on preparing for curb and gutter and sidewalk. It is anticipated that the remaining paving will be completed before Thanksgiving.

Thanks to everyone for your patience as we button up this project!

October 19, 2016: The foundation work on the retaining wall continues this week. Stay alert and watch out for those ghosts and goblins!

September 30, 2016: Major project milestone achieved today! The intersection of River Road and Horseman Park Drive is open; the City turned the signal on this morning. Please be aware of this new change and travel safely as work continues.

Congratulations to our crews on the job!

September 28, 2016: Paving work continues today, along with the pouring of the sidewalk tomorrow and Friday. It is anticipated that the completion of the parapet wall will be done today, allowing for the full bridge to open on Friday. In addition, the intersection lights should be fully operational by Friday - we are excited to see these project milestones complete!

Please be mindful of our crews and drive safely.

September 14, 2016: The work continues! Work this week is focused on forming the parapet wall on the bridge in preparation for a concrete pour next week. Paving finished on both sides of the bridge yesterday. As of this morning, traffic was shifted across the bridge so work could begin on the intersection of Horseman Park Drive and River Road.

Please be mindful of these lane changes and stay alert for your safety and that of our crews!

September 2, 2016: We made significant progress over the past week with the pouring of the new bridge desk along with the approach slabs. The traffic signals were set in place but will not be in use until traffic is moved to its permanent location. Next week curb and gutter will be poured on both ends of the bridge and the outside barrier wall will be poured on the bridge deck.

Keep an eye out for our work crews and help keep everyone safe. Happy Labor Day to you and enjoy the holiday weekend!

August 19, 2016: Work continues on the bridge deck preparing the rebar portion of the structure. In addition, large storm drain culverts will be installed over the next several weeks. Please drive carefully with the increased traffic volumes due to school activities. Let’s keep everyone safe!

August 3, 2016: With the first day of school approaching, our crews are working to re-stripe River Road from Brigham Road to Tamarisk Drive and from Rustic Drive to 2450 South. Paving has been finished from Brigham Road to Dixie Power’s yard. Work continues on the bridge deck and paving is underway from 2800 South north along River Road.

Please take extra care driving through the construction site as the monsoon rain season begins – thanks for your patience!

July 26, 2016: Due to the high temperatures, our contractor is working different hours to keep the project moving forward. You will note that bridge work is now from 2am to 2pm to keep our crews safe and working efficiently. Work on the curb, gutter, and sidewalk north of 2800 South is ongoing. In addition, paving will be underway on the west half of Horseman Park Drive and River Road from Brigham Road to Dixie Power’s yard. Work continues on the installation of the 3-foot-by-7-foot concrete box culvert north of the bridge.

Thanks for your patience with the project and stay cool!

July 19, 2016: Work on the bridge deck continues this week, along with the installation of two 30-inch diameter steel casings for future waterlines. We’re preparing Horseman Park Drive for next week's asphalt installation, as well as River Road from Brigham Road to Dixie Power’s yard. We’re also installing a 3-foot-by-7-foot concrete box culvert between Horseman Park Drive and 2800 South.

July 12, 2016: We appreciate everyone’s patience as the project continues to move forward! Activity this week includes the installation of an 8-inch waterline at 1420 East, backfilling of the outside bridge abutments, preparation of the bridge deck, and preparation for the curb and gutter north of 2800 South.

Please help to keep yourself and our work crews safe!

July 5, 2016: Several elements of the project are coming together this week. Pedestrians will be happy to see that the sidewalk is being poured starting at Brigham Road and heading north on River Road. Concrete retaining wall #1, between Horseman Park Drive and 2800 South, should be finished this week. A sewer manhole is being installed at 1420 East River road, as well as storm drain pipe around 2800 South River Road. Additionally, 500 feet of 30-inch diameter steel casings on the bridge will be installed for future waterlines.

Thank you for helping us keep the work zone safe!

June 29, 2016: Exciting progress this week! Maybe you noticed those large cranes? Seven concrete girders on the northeast side of the bridge are being installed along with seven more girders on Thursday. Work continues on the retaining wall and underground utilities for the signal at River Road and Horseman Park Drive.

Don’t be a distracted driver – stay safe!

June 22, 2016: Curb and gutters along Horseman Park Drive are taking shape! You may notice a couple of other things too – work on the concrete retaining wall from Horsemen Park Drive to 2800 South and the installation of bases for the traffic signal poles at River Road and Horseman Park Drive.

Keep an eye out for our work crews and stay cool!

June 7, 2016: The project is moving along smoothly. We are busy with concrete pours this week - you will notice concrete being poured for the sidewalk between Rustic Drive and 2450 South and the curb and gutter between Brigham Road and Dixie Power’s yard. In addition, Bridge abutment #1 will be poured on Thursday and crews are also busy installing a 66-inch storm drain pipe.

With our crews working along the roadway, please make every effort to help keep them safe!

May 25, 2016: There is a lot of activity on the project this week. Work is underway pouring the center column for the bridge deck, and later in the week work will be focused on the east abutment. Other work this week includes completing the installation of the storm drain pipe between Brigham Road and Dixie Power’s utility yard, and prepping for the sidewalk and road widening between Rustic and 2450 South. With all the work taking place, please don’t be a distracted driver – stay safe!

May 10, 2016: Safety first! Please be mindful of our work crews as you travel through the project.

You may have noticed the curb and gutters that were poured Tuesday from Rustic Drive to 2450 South. Preparation for sidewalk and asphalt along this stretch of River Road will be underway this week. In addition, the concrete caissons for the bridge have been completed. Work to prepare for the new bridge structure will be ongoing for the next month, and includes concrete abutments and a center column.

April 26, 2016: There is a lot of activity at the work site this week so please drive carefully! Work continues on the bridge foundation preparation, and installation of the storm drain catch basins and pipes along River Road between Rustic Drive and 2450 South is also underway.

Thanks to everyone for observing the traffic routes and keeping us all safe!

April 19, 2016: This week work will be focused on widening the road between Rustic Drive and 2450 South, installing drain pipes and relocating the 24-inch waterline. In addition, work continues on preparing the bridge foundation.

April 12, 2016: Work will continue this week preparing for the bridge foundation. Storm drain boxes are in production for the road widening that will occur between Rustic Drive and 2450 South; construction on this part of the project will start next week. The project remains on schedule.

Please avoid any unnecessary distractions while driving through the construction site – we want everyone to arrive home safely!

April 5, 2016: The project is continuing on schedule. All traffic has been routed to the upper bridge so the lower bridge can be removed this week. Next week work will begin on the east side of River Road between 2450 South and Rustic Drive.

Please use the designated routes. Making U-turns on River Road causes unsafe conditions for travelers and work crews. Help us keep everyone safe!

March 30, 2016: Starting Thursday, March 31 there will be no left turns at River Road and Horseman Park Drive for the duration of the project. See detour route.

Starting Monday, April 4: No left turns at River Road and Tamarisk Drive for the duration of the project. See detour route.

This week: Contractor will finish removing the concrete barrier on the bridge upper bridge.

Next two weeks: Contractor will be removing the lower bridge.

March 22, 2016: Over the next three weeks, the contractor is setting up traffic control and removing the concrete barrier on the upstream bridge; this bridge will remain in place. Work will also begin on the demolition and removal of the downstream bridge.

Please drive with caution and help keep our work zone safe!

About the Project

This safety project consists of widening River Road from 2450 South to Brigham Road. This 1.4-mile section of River Road will be upgraded to a five-lane arterial street; improvements will include street lighting, curb, gutter, sidewalk, and asphalt widening. In addition, a traffic signal will be installed at River Road and Horseman Park Drive, and the Fort Pierce Wash Bridge will be replaced. To ensure safety during the construction period, motorists should plan for the following:

  • Detours, lane shifts, lane closures, and access restrictions at intersections.
  • The intersections of River Road and Tamarisk Drive and River Road and Horseman Park Drive will be right turn only for the duration of the project. No left turns will be allowed off of or onto River Road at Tamarisk Drive or Horseman Park Drive.
  • The shoulders on the Fort Pierce Wash Bridge will be closed during construction.

Please use caution while traveling through the work zone – your safety and that of our work crew is important to us!

Project Start Date: March 28, 2016
Anticipated End Date: August 20, 2016

Thank you for your patience and help in making this a successful project!
